Assembly Supports Sexual Violence Awareness Week
The weekly University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) meeting commenced in room 302 HUB-Robeson Center on February 25th at 8:00 p.m. The original agenda consisted of no new or old business but was adopted to include the adoption of the minute from the February 11th assembly meeting and Bill 12-09, Penn State Sexual Violence Awareness Week.
The special presenter for the evening, Kevin Morooney, Vice Provost for Information Technology, had to cancel his presentation at the last minute.
President Anand Ganjam, during his report, reminded the assembly of the Trustee Town Hall Panel, which will be held next Wednesday, March 4th at 4:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall. In addition, this Monday, March 2nd will be the grand opening for the newly renovated portion of the HUB-Robeson Center. The event will start at 11:00 a.m. and will conclude around 4:00 p.m. Both the Trustee Town Hall Panel and grand opening are free and open to the public.
Vice President’s Emily McDonald’s report was briefer than President Ganjam’s. As promoted by posters around campus, Vice President McDonald noted that the highly anticipated Thaw Festival, promoting music, art, and films. The festival will be running through the weekend, and more information can be found at thawfestival.org.
Added to the agenda by Representative Melissa Mcleery, Bill 12-09, Penn State Sexual Violence Awareness Week, passed with a voted of 30-2. The Penn State Sexual Violence Awareness Week will be held during April 6-10 with varying events to spread awareness of this omnipresent issue and support the survivors of such attacks. In conjunction with the Inter-Fraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, Graduate and Professional Student Association, and Student Athlete Advisory Board, the UPUA will help with the funding of the week. Included in this funding, Bill 12-09 will fund a keynote speaker, Jasmin Enriquez, and “Only Do It With Consent” t-shirts.
Following this piece of legislation, the Assembly moved into a Work Session where each committee met to discuss their plans and goals for the rest of the 9th assembly. Following the work session, the committees gave their respective reports and individuals gave comments for the good of the order. Most notable, Schreyer Honors College Representative Michael Mancini announced that speaking at this year’s Shaping the Future Summit will be Magic Johnson. Tickets to see Magic Johnson speak at Eisenhower Auditorium on April 1st will be free to students and will go on sale on March 18th.
The meeting ended promptly at 9:30 p.m. The UPUA’s next meeting will be Wednesday, March 4th at 8:00 p.m. in room 302 HUB-Robeson Center.
