Statement by President McKay on Signing LGBTQ+ Advocacy and Grassroots Advocacy Software Legislation

August 11th, 2020

Despite all challenges, I’m proud to see the hard work of the student Representatives making up the @UPUA‘s General Assembly.

Over the last few weeks, they’ve raised the bar by e-voting on two pieces of legislation, which I signed this morning. Learn more below:

The first, Resolution #15-15, dedicates this Assembly to strong advocacy on behalf of the LGBTQ+ Community through its new Justice and Equity Committee (@UPUA_jande) and highlights key @penn_state resources for students belonging to it.

Even though @State_CollegePA‘s first Pride Parade was cancelled due to COVID-19, our students deserve to feel welcomed and celebrated for who they are at all times. This includes having a student government that’s willing to fight for them, especially now.

The second, Resolution #16-15, authorizes the @UPUA to enter into a contract with The Soft Edge, Inc. for the purposes of furthering our grassroots & virtual advocacy efforts, utilizing Assembly discretionary monies.

With this tool, the @UPUA can empower the entire student body to advocate on behalf of their fellow students in collective activism.

This is a gamechanger in virtual student engagement and grassroots advocacy, and I’m incredibly excited to see how it’s utilized.
