Statement by UPUA Executives and Representatives on Black Caucus Zoom-Bombing

Office of the Press Secretary

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Jan. 29, 2021)— On Jan. 27, 2021, 51 unauthorized users disrupted the Penn State Black Caucus’ Zoom room during the Spring Involvement Fair, directing numerous racial and homophobic epithets at three Black Caucus Executive Board members. The chat was filled with anti-Semitic and white supremacist language and symbols. Several users screamed, played loud music or exposed themselves in an inappropriate sexual matter. The present Black Caucus members reported and removed each intruder, and contacted the Penn State administration immediately.

There is a long, unfortunate history of hate-driven attacks against Black and brown students at Penn State. Let us be clear: We strongly condemn these egregious actions made against Penn State’s Black Caucus and hereby call on federal, state, and local officials to levy charges against the 51 perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law. Additionally, we urge the University to actively investigate this event beyond solely condemning it. These individuals must be held accountable.

Today, UPUA Resolution #46-15: Condemnation of the Zoom-Bombing Made Against the Black Caucus and Demands for Legal Charges Against Perpetrators will be introduced to the General Assembly’s Committee on Justice and Equity. In solidarity with the Black community at Penn State, we full-heartedly endorse this resolution as a step toward bringing these criminals to justice. Students can share their support by attending the Committee on Justice and Equity tonight at 4:30p.m., attending the UPUA General Assembly next Wednesday at 7pm EST, or by leaving a public comment on the UPUA website which will be read to the General Assembly. These links can be found in the UPUA’s Instagram bio.
